Dziady performance has a wide spectrum of references to Belarusian traditional culture. Pancakes – the ancient symbol of the sun – were arranged by me in the form of ornament featured in Belarusian traditional weaving. The ornament is composed with four crossed, perpendicular lines. According to some researchers it symbolizes Dziady ritual dedicated to ancestors. Some others consider it a symbol of virgin, performing the ritual, ritual soil, virginity, chastity, ritual purity. Symbol of  Dziady  combined with the ideogram of land means virgin, untouched land. Presenting this symbol on the ground underlines the meaning.

          Dziady was celebrated several times a year. The Belarusians used to leave boiled, painted eggs and special festive cake called "korowaj" on their ancestor's graves. During celebrating the day of pagan god Viales they were placing pancakes on big stones - the objects of worship in the ancient times. The first pancake fried on any celebration was left for ancestors in the Holy Corner of the house. 

          Performing Dziady was to me a retrieving the memory of traditional rituals and their rich meaning. It was a form of sacrifise for the ancestors, and a request for good crops too. The place of action is meaningfull to me.  It's very close to the Belarusian border and to my small homeland Bialostocczyzna. There lives Belarusian minority in Poland, to which I belong.

          The symbol of Dziady is also called a paw of four outgrowth or deaf paw. Similar or identical motives are called acorns, bears or blind sparrows.
